Potato chips, the abundance of which can sometimes make your head spin, are one of the worst foods you can eat or offer to a child for whose health the adult is solely responsible... Every element of their production raises numerous doubts. But first things first.

The history of Lay's chips dates back to 1932. Their name comes from the name of their creator - merchant Herman W. Lay, who worked for the Barrett Food Company and sold Gardner's chips, driving around the States in his Ford.

That same year, Lay borrows $100 and rents a warehouse in Nashville, slowly starting to build up capital. He hired his first salesman in 1934, and in 1939 he bought the Barrett Food Company and renamed it HW Lay Lingo & Company, selling Lay's chips and other snack foods.

In 1944, the name of the company was shortened to “The Lay's Lay Lingo Company.” It was the first chip company to advertise on television; the then popular actor Bert Lahr was invited as the “face of the product”.

In 1961, the Frito Company, founded by Derrick Lauthaert, merged with Lay's to become Frito-Lay Inc. The corporation became the world's largest snack company, and soon after introduced its famous slogan, “betcha can't eat just one.

In 1965, Frito-Lay merged with the Pepsi-Cola Company to form PepsiCo, Inc. A new recipe for chips, introduced in 1991, made them crispier and more fresh for a long time. Shortly thereafter, the company released ribbed “Wavy Lay's” to the market. From the mid to late '90s, Lay's offered reduced-fat baked chips as well as Lay's WOW, which were completely fat-free.

Since 1996, sales of chips began, and initially only 4 main flavors were available to consumers: Salt, Bacon, Green Onion and Paprika. All products were imported and imported from other countries. Only by the beginning of the 2000s, on a wave of success, the corporation decided to build the first Russian factory.

In the 2000s, Lay's began to compete with Pringles by releasing Lay's Stax in cylindrical cans. In Russia, this version of chips appeared relatively recently.

If you can't imagine your life without chips, you should think about a healthier alternative. More and more products are appearing in stores that can successfully replace classic chips. These are, for example, dried slices of tomatoes, beets or carrots. Their price is still relatively high, but over time it will become more affordable as the market becomes more competitive.

However, it is worth knowing that healthy vegetable chips can be prepared at home yourself. All you need is a stove, a little imagination and patience. You can season homemade chips with, for example, tomato, herbs, pepper, chili, paprika, etc., depending on what you like best.

The problem of craving fatty snacks can also remain unscathed by eating nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, etc.) or pumpkin seeds. They contain high amounts of magnesium, so they help control stress and additionally provide us with healthy vegetable fats (not hardened ones like chips).

What flavor do the chips have? No matter what flavor you choose: pepper or onion, bacon, cheese, etc., there is no doubt that the first answer that comes to mind when asked is: “salty”... Excess salt in the diet increases blood pressure. Therefore, people suffering from hypertension should avoid eating salty snacks. The same is true for everyone who suffers from various heart ailments.

Salt also causes the body to retain water, which causes swelling in the legs or face. Stored water also has its own volume and weight, so people who care about their body shape should limit their consumption. When someone goes on a diet and suddenly starts losing weight very quickly, they say, “It’s water, not fat.” It is so indeed. Radical changes in eating habits include, among other things, including more vegetables in your diet and limiting processed foods - when you eat no salt or eat much less salt, you begin to lose stored water.

How can you make potatoes that don’t even lie next to the onions have taste and smell? Food chemistry comes to the rescue: add onion flavor. Although boiled potatoes themselves have a high glycemic index, since they consist mainly of starch, in the right combination and in the right quantities they will not cause much harm to anyone. Many people can't imagine Sunday lunch without it. Potato chips are obviously a high quality, processed product - crushed, molded, fried, "stuffed" with artificial additives and, therefore, with a high glycemic index and fat content. How to store chips at home

Most often, chips spoil due to the oil in which they were fried. It does not last long, especially in an open space. To protect the chips from it, you need to repack them. Use a different container that will not allow air to pass through. It's better to put them in a dark place after that.

You can also pack them tightly and place them in the refrigerator. The basic rule is not to place chips next to fish, meat and other strong-smelling foods.

Another small but quite valuable piece of advice – don’t be afraid to store chips in the freezer. Nothing will happen to them there, and the shelf life will last about three months. And before use, such a product does not require defrosting, which is very convenient.
