Sunflowers are ripe - what to do with them now?
How to dry seeds - in inflorescences or take them out and dry?

Is it possible to store seeds for a long time in cut inflorescences?

Sunflowers ripen closer to autumn, depending on the region where they grow.

Usually they are dried, if the weather is good, you can pour them onto film and dry them outside (if you live in your own house), if it rains - my grandmother dried them in the attic.

Then they are sifted to remove debris.

Then you can take it to Oleynica and hand it over, in return you will receive sunflower oil.

If there are only a few of them, you can simply fry them and then click them.

Some of the surplus is sold.

There is no need to store it in inflorescences; you need to knock the seeds out of the sunflower, do not leave them in the inflorescences.

First of all, you need to determine the degree of ripening of sunflowers. The authors who answered here can teach you this - “How to determine the degree of ripeness of a sunflower”

After the seeds have reached their maturity in the inflorescences, the baskets are cut off and prepared for processing, which basically consists of knocking the seeds out of the inflorescences.

The methods are different - some people turn the basket over and knock out the seeds, others just pull them out with their hands. The result is the same, only for large volumes the first method is the most effective. We don't have a lot of sunflowers, so we just pulled out the seeds with our hands, breaking the basket into pieces.

After this, the seeds must be dried. Again, if there is not a lot (as it was for us), this can be done in the oven, at a temperature of 60-80 degrees, constantly turning the seeds over and opening the oven so that moisture vapor can escape. Large volumes are dried in a scattered layer no more than 2-3 centimeters thick, in the shade of a well-ventilated room.

Drying is considered complete when the shell breaks when rolling the seed between your fingers.

In the previous 6 answers, everything seemed to be described correctly, but they probably forgot one point (quite important). It is most efficient and quick to remove seeds from the inflorescence head if you use a bed net .

How to dry sunflower seeds

It is necessary to rinse them thoroughly in a colander under running water to get rid of debris and dust. Then you should blot the seeds with a napkin to remove moisture.

Drying the product is easy - just place a tray of seeds spread out in a thin layer on the balcony in direct sunlight and stir them periodically. After about 4 hours they will be ready for storage.

You can spread the seeds on a baking sheet in one layer and place in an oven preheated to 180 degrees for 20 minutes. Or place the product in the microwave at high power and heat for 20-25 minutes.

True, in this case the seeds will not only dry out, but also become fried. If you prefer to cook them in a frying pan, then dry them either in the open air or in an electric dryer - place the product in bowls and heat at a minimum temperature for about an hour. After this, the seeds can be poured into storage containers and fried as needed.

To get salted seeds, use one of the following methods:

  • sprinkle them with salt during cooking and stir;
  • soak the seeds in a saline solution - 500 g of salt per liter of water. Time: 6 to 36 hours depending on desired salinity.
