Sea buckthorn oil: can you make it yourself?
As you know, if you want to do it well, do it yourself. Therefore, many lovers of home cosmetology and traditional medicine make sea buckthorn oil on their own. Why should “good” disappear, which grows well in Russian latitudes and brings great benefits to people? However, preparing sea buckthorn oil at home is not only the prerogative of sea buckthorn tree owners; many people buy orange berries to produce a miracle cure.
It is not surprising that sea buckthorn oil, created independently and not purchased at a pharmacy, is considered the most useful. By preparing the product ourselves, we know that the product will be high-quality, healthy and, most importantly, natural. We will do it for ourselves and our loved ones, sparing neither berries nor time for this noble cause. Unlike many manufacturers, who are much more interested in making a product quickly and selling it at a higher price.
There are several ways to make sea buckthorn oil; we’ll look at a few below. Some methods are simpler, others will ensure the maximum content of nutrients. In general, they are similar to industrial processes, with the only difference being that they are not designed for huge volumes. Sea buckthorn oil can be made from cake, juice, fresh or frozen berries.
Storage
We all have a refrigerator at home. This is great, isn't it? This is where sea buckthorn oil prepared at home should be stored. As mentioned numerously above, the storage container should be glass, tightly closed and preferably dark in color.
This is due to the fact that light negatively affects the quality of the prepared oil. It simply begins to deteriorate and becomes unusable.
As for shelf life, there are no exact dates. But it is not recommended to use oil that has been in the refrigerator for more than one year.
Sea buckthorn oil from cake: recipe
This sea buckthorn oil recipe is considered quite simple and economical. Among the products, besides sea buckthorn itself, we will need vegetable oil (olive or sunflower).
Sea buckthorn fruits need to be washed well and cleared of debris. This is a pretty important step for making quality butter. Use a juicer to squeeze the juice out of sea buckthorn berries. You can drink the juice or make something tasty from it.
The cake should be placed in a non-metallic container, for example, glass, and filled with vegetable oil. You need half a liter of oil for three cups of cake. Then you should cover the jar with a lid and place it in a dark place for 6 days. After which the oil must be strained from the cake. At this stage, it is allowed to use oil. But, if you want to improve the product, you should repeat the process with the same number of fruits, and fill the fresh cake with already made sea buckthorn oil. Once the oil has been infused again for several days, it can be used. Sea buckthorn oil from cake is best used externally.
Existing recipes
Judging by the technology for making oil, this process is quite labor-intensive and quite difficult to repeat at home. And therefore, most women do not want to waste their time on this procedure, and simply buy the necessary product at the pharmacy.
But there are several easy ways to create such a valuable ingredient. Now we will figure out how to properly make aromatic sea buckthorn oil at home.
Fragrant sea buckthorn oil from cake. Recipe 1
The recipe presented below is the easiest, but if you think that during production, the product will lose some of its nutrients. This is wrong. On the contrary, you will get good quality oil.
- I remind you that the berries you are going to use must be ripe.
- Take the required amount of product (for example, 3 glasses), rinse thoroughly with warm water.
- Pass in a juicer. We don't need juice. But don't even think about pouring it out. Fresh sea buckthorn juice is very healthy
- The resulting grounds are called cake. Transfer it to a non-metallic container.
- Pour in base oil, such as sunflower (0.5 liters).
- The resulting mixture must be placed in a dark place for one week. This must be done so that the sunflower oil is saturated with the healing substances of sea buckthorn berries.
- After the allotted time, you need to collect the butter.
- It is possible to double the abundance of vitamins and microelements; for this, the procedure is repeated.
- We take new berries, wash them, squeeze out the juice, and drink them. Add the existing oil to the collected cake. We insist for a week.
Quite an easy recipe, don't you think? True, you will have to wait quite a long time for the oil. But beauty, like health, requires sacrifice.

- Then we put the dried berries in the freezer for an average of five to six days.
- Next, you need to defrost the berries gradually, that is, initially transfer them to the refrigerator, then take them indoors, and defrost them at room temperature. After the defrosting procedure, you will need to squeeze out the juice and leave it in the refrigerator. At the same time, dry the cake.
- Separate the seeds and grind.
- We take a container, add seeds in a concentration of flour and cake, add juice and olive oil. Mix thoroughly.
- Warm the resulting composition in a water bath (about three hours).
- Leave the resulting mixture in a warm and dark place for 4 days.
- After the set period, you will probably notice a layer of oil on the surface; you need to collect it, and put the rest in a glass container and leave for another 2-3 days.
- Collect the oil again. We repeat the process 3-4 times.

Recipe for sea buckthorn oil from juice
Of course, we do not take the juice that we bought in the store, but the one we prepared ourselves. To do this, place the sea buckthorn in a juicer and make juice. Unlike the first method, here we remove the pulp and work only with juice. By the way, you don’t have to throw away the cake, but leave it for preparing other products, or the same sea buckthorn oil (using the first method).
The juice should be poured into a wide glass container. The wider the container, the better. The juice should be placed in a dark place for a day. When you see an oil film on the liquid, don’t be surprised: this is our sea buckthorn oil. Now you need to collect it with a spoon or drain it. The resulting sea buckthorn oil must be poured into a glass jar and sealed tightly.
It should be noted that this is a rather expensive recipe for preparing sea buckthorn oil. To ensure that the product is not a meager amount, you will have to take a lot of berries. But it will be the most beneficial sea buckthorn oil, very concentrated and maximally rich in benefits. This oil can even be used for food without fear.
This recipe is best suited for those who have garden plots with sea buckthorn trees.
Sea buckthorn oil in cooking
Thanks to its healing properties, “northern pineapple” oil has found wide use in medicine and cosmetology. But few people know that it is also used in cooking.
Unfortunately, you cannot fry in this oil, but you can season fruit salads. Sea buckthorn fruit squeezes will add a unique, piquant taste to your favorite fruits. For taste, oil is added to meat and fish dishes, giving them an unusual twist.
And your favorite pies and buns can be baked with the addition of this ingredient. The baked goods will become rosy and fragrant.
Storing sea buckthorn oil
To ensure that sea buckthorn oil, prepared according to any recipe, does not change its properties and remains useful, it must be stored correctly. A glass or ceramic container with a well-closing lid is suitable for this. The oil should be placed in a dark place with a temperature of about 6 degrees above zero. If the product is properly maintained, it can be used for several years, and at the same time it will retain the maximum of useful substances.
Storage Features
The most effective storage is in the refrigerator . It is best to use darkened glass containers or clay vessels. In transparent containers, the properties of the product may be lost. The optimal temperature is +4-10 °C .
Storage duration:
- The product prepared at home will last in the refrigerator for about 1 year .
- The purchased pharmaceutical drug is stored for 2 years from the date of manufacture.
- Candles are suitable for use at temperatures not exceeding +15 °C for 2 years .
- Capsules are kept in a dark, cool room for 24 months after production.
It is always clear from the appearance of the product whether it is suitable for use or not.
How to store the purchased product
The features and storage conditions of oil purchased in a store or pharmacy are always indicated in the instructions for the drug . Typically the expiration date is:
- The drug in a glass bottle – 1 year .
- Candles – 1.5-2 years .
- Sea buckthorn oil in capsules – 2 years .
When sealed, the bottles with the product are placed in a dark place, for example, on a kitchen cabinet shelf. After opening, the oil is transferred to the refrigerator. Store it until the expiration date.
How to preserve a substance prepared at home
It is important not only to prepare a product based on sea buckthorn correctly, but also to preserve it without losing its nutritional properties. The optimal container is a clay or ceramic vessel. It will reliably protect the product from sunlight and daylight.
If such containers are not available, glass containers , preferably dark ones. For storage, choose bottles and jars with a narrowed neck. They are more convenient for several reasons:
- It won't spoil so quickly.
- No foreign odors will enter the container, which will affect the quality.
- A narrow neck is easier to clog (air quickly leads to the decomposition of fatty acids that are in the composition).
The optimal place for storage is a refrigerator, cellar, basement. Choose a cool, dry room with a temperature of no more than 15 °C . As the indicators increase, the substance quickly loses its properties and loses its usefulness.
