No one wants to eat spoiled food and put their family in danger.
We are used to looking at the expiration date of food to understand when it should be thrown away.
However, many of us are confused and do not understand what the dates on food packages actually mean.
To understand everything, you first need to know how to decipher the labels on packages and understand when a product is safe for consumption and when you can get rid of it.
Firstly, dates on products help you know how long a product can be stored on store shelves, and this depends on many factors.
For example, whether the product is properly refrigerated or will be frozen, stored in a dark room, or exposed to external factors. It also depends on how well it will keep after being purchased from the store.
In other words, the labeling on the packaging does not indicate whether the product is safe for consumption.
In fact, these dates are needed so that sellers know when to remove goods from store shelves or are used for advertising purposes so that people buy certain products more often.
Shelf life and shelf life
When a product says “sell by date,” those dates are for sellers only and not for buyers. They tell stores how long they should keep products on shelves and are not related to the expiration date of the products.
The sell-by date does not indicate the time at which a product will begin to spoil or become unsafe for consumption. But it does give clues to how long it will last at home if stored properly. If a product is still on the shelves and has not been sold, the store must remove it from the shelves.
The shelf life is different from the sell-by date and indicates the degree of freshness, but not the expiration date.
In most cases, this date is set by tasters in a laboratory, who determine that the product tasted best before a certain date.
This also has nothing to do with the safety of the product, but rather with how long it can be stored without losing its properties. For example, sour cream may become slightly sour after a certain date.
These dates can serve as an indication of when the product is approaching its expiration date. This means you should pay attention to indicators that the product may be going bad, such as smell or color. Often these dates are approximate and several days before the product becomes inedible.
Perhaps we should get rid of dates on packages altogether, and instead print on them instructions on how to properly store food and how to tell if it has gone bad.
So how long can you store these foods?
Signs of damage
You should be careful when choosing the product you plan to consume. Mayonnaise can be spoiled even with current expiration dates in case of improper transportation, for example, violation of the requirements for temperature and humidity of the room, entailing a significant reduction in storage duration. To assess the quality of a product, you should be guided by the signs of an expired product:
- Color - a bright yellow tint of the top layer indicates the rise of the oil base and the beginning of the decomposition process;
- The consistency is changed, uneven, the sauce becomes liquid or, conversely, too thick and viscous, dries out;
- When purchasing, look not only at the production date, assessing whether you will have time to use up the refill before the expiration date, but also at the tightness of the packaging, which may be broken, for example, when a plastic jar is deformed;
- Delay is characterized by a pronounced sour odor, similar to the smell of old rancid oil and rotten eggs;
- Taste – due to the oxidation of fats, bitterness appears;
- Presence of air bubbles;
- Increased acidity.
The danger of using expired food
You should not eat products with these characteristics. Even heat treatment will not help to avoid severe intoxication. The main consequences that can result from the use of such a product in cooking are allergic reactions (up to Quincke's edema), poisoning, and exacerbation of gastrointestinal diseases.
If, after paying for the goods at the checkout, you find an expired product at home, in accordance with Russian legislation, you have every right to return the sauce to the seller and demand a refund.
Where can I use it?
If the dressing has expired only a couple of days ago and has no signs of spoilage, it is quite possible to use it for preparing hot dishes, for example:
- When roasting meat in French;
- For marinade of chicken or shish kebab followed by heat treatment;
- Adding to dough for pies, pancakes and other baked goods.
Some housewives manage to make masks for hair, face and body from the spoiled product, use it as fertilizer for house plants or to fight lice. Of course, the benefits of such actions are very doubtful, but there may well be negative consequences. Therefore, the best option would be to simply recycle the product.
Expiring products
The expiration date on a milk carton does not always indicate the date it will go bad. Usually the date is given because it is influenced by many factors. It loses vitamins or takes on an unpleasant taste when exposed to light, which is why it is often sold in cardboard or opaque plastic packaging.
If pasteurized milk is stored at 2-3 degrees Celsius, it will remain fresh for 2-5 days after the expiration date.
Use smell when deciding whether milk is safe to drink. If you notice a sour smell or taste, or it has turned a blue-green color, it's time to throw it away.
Fresh meat should be eaten within 1-2 days after purchase. Home refrigerators are generally not cold enough to keep meat fresh for more than 2 days.
If the meat has darkened or turned green, become slippery, sticky or dry, this also indicates spoilage, just like a sour smell.
But if you freeze meat, it will be stored much longer: frozen minced meat - up to 3 months, pork - up to 6 months, beef and chicken - up to 9-12 months.
Hard cheeses tend to age for a long time, and therefore this product does not always spoil after the expiration date.
Cheese such as Parmesan can be stored for up to 4 weeks after the expiration date, and even if there is a small mold on it, it can be cut off and transferred to a new package, as there may be some mold left on the old one.
The bread may go stale, but it can be eaten for some time after the expiration date.
If the bread has a sour or unpleasant smell or mold is visible, then of course you should not eat it. Frozen bread will also keep much longer than at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
How to tell if mayonnaise has gone bad
Choose your food carefully. Be sure to check the expiration date printed on the packaging. Check the tightness of the container. Mayonnaise can spoil if it is transported improperly, if the temperature is abnormal or if there is a sudden change in air humidity. We list the common signs of low-quality products:
- Rich yellow color of the top layer;
- Heterogeneous consistency, presence of lumps;
- Too liquid mass;
- Expired shelf life;
- Sour smell;
- Broken packaging seal;
- Deformed container;
- Bitter taste;
- The presence of air bubbles inside the mass;
- High acidity.
Expired shelf life
This is another dairy product that can be consumed after the expiration date. An open jar of yogurt will spoil faster than a closed one, so in an airtight container it can last 1-2 weeks after the date recommended on the package.
Pay attention to the smell and presence of mold in the yogurt, and if everything is fine, it is safe to eat.
Chips may also become stale after the expiration date, but they may be quite safe to eat.
Since this product is subject to intensive processing, it can be stored for quite a long time. If the package was opened, the chips will be fine for several more weeks, and if closed, then for several months.
Have you ever noticed a white coating on a chocolate bar? This is not mold, but what is called "chocolate bloom", and is associated with fat or sugar content, but is safe to consume.
If you store chocolate in a cool place below 20 degrees Celsius, it will outlive its expiration date.
Many seasonings have a long shelf life due to their high sugar and salt content. Here's how long these seasonings last after opening:
Ketchup can be stored for about a month in the kitchen cupboard and 6-8 months in the refrigerator.
Mayonnaise 2 months in the refrigerator
Jams and confitures for about 1 year in the refrigerator
Mustard – 6-8 months in the refrigerator
Salad dressing - 3 months in the refrigerator
Most eggs stay fresh for about a month after the expiration date if stored in the refrigerator.
If you're not sure, there's an easy way to check if your eggs are spoiled.
Place them in a glass of water: if the egg sinks to the bottom, it is suitable for consumption, but if it floats, it should be thrown away.
Is it possible to eat expired shortbread cookies?
I bought cookies, but they were two months out of date.
Is it possible to eat it? I wouldn't risk my health over this. It’s not for nothing that expiration dates and storage conditions were invented. It is undesirable to eat not only expired products, but also those whose expiration date is almost over, when there are two or three days left until the expiration date. Therefore, I would not advise you to eat expired food.
What will happen to him? The only thing is that if stored incorrectly, flour can go rancid. If there is no peculiar “stale” smell; if the cookies were stored correctly, in undamaged packaging and at normal temperatures; and even better - in the cold, where even ordinary bread can be stored for a long time - nothing happened to him. Firstly, any product has a “safety margin”; nothing spoils instantly after the expiration date. Secondly, the cookies are dry, which greatly increases their storage capabilities. And thirdly, it contains a lot of sugar, a strong preservative.
In general, eat and don’t bother yourself with nonsense.

After expiration date
10. Butter
If butter has an expiration date on it, it can be stored for about a month after the expiration date if stored properly at around 4 degrees Celsius.
Spoiled oil may have an unpleasant odor, be too soft or too hard.
11. Frozen foods
Frozen foods can be eaten after the expiration date.
With the exception of frozen meat, most foods can be stored in the freezer for months or even years without risk of them spoiling.
Some frozen foods may have spots on them due to the food being poorly packaged. It is safe to eat, but the taste may not be as good.
Many manufacturers claim that canned food does not spoil for two years, while experts recommend storing them at a temperature no higher than 23 degrees Celsius and no longer than 12 months. However, the likelihood that canned food will spoil after a year is quite low.
Once you have opened canned food, you should eat it within 2-7 days depending on the product. For example, canned fish is only good for two days after opening, while canned fruit can last a week. Store opened canned goods in the refrigerator and follow safety precautions.
13. Pasta
Although pasta often has a shelf life of about 1-2 years, it can be stored much longer since this product does not contain water.
Keep them in a cool, dry place and the pasta will last for several years. If the pasta has a strange smell or has gone stale, you can throw it away.
14. Breakfast cereals
Again, this product is highly processed. Although the flavor of breakfast cereal may change, if stored properly in a cool, dry place, it can last up to 6 months after the expiration date.
Carbonated drinks contain a lot of chemicals, so their shelf life is much longer. It is believed that soda can be drunk 4-9 months after the date indicated on the packaging.
You can be poisoned by any stale product. Most often, poisoning occurs due to bacteria in food. The most famous are staphylococcus, salmonella and E. coli. They appear when food storage standards are violated. The temperature of the room where they are located must correspond to that indicated on the packaging. It is necessary to cook food at high temperatures to protect yourself from germs.
Is mayonnaise safe to eat when it is heated?
Did they really decide to wag their finger at someone? And what? Well, did you get excited? As they aroused, they will forget. This company has so much money, it’s enough for more than one trial. After all, it is unknown when, where and at what price they bought these mayonnaises. At any more or less decent wholesaler, goods with an expiring expiration date can be bought at half price, or even cheaper.
Erotic cooking widely uses fruits, vegetables, seafood, fruits, roots, seasonings and spices for cooking. We should also not forget about dairy and fermented milk products, such as kefir, cottage cheese, yogurt, and cheese. Food consumed by a person must contain many vitamins, including the “reproduction” vitamins A and E, which are found in eggs, cod liver, and carrots.
Chopped vegetables, meat, and sausage themselves cannot be stored for more than 6 hours (due to an increase in the area of insemination by bacteria), and the sauce speeds up this process.
Old age cannot be happiness. Old age can only be peace or disaster. She becomes at peace when she is respected. What makes her miserable is oblivion and loneliness.
Mayonnaise poisoning is considered quite common. This is explained by the fact that the product is very popular. It is actively used in cooking. Many people often prepare it at home, for example, to make salads with mayonnaise. That is why poisoning with this product is not uncommon. It has different symptoms depending on the severity of intoxication.
All these tips apply to quality products manufactured to high European standards, and in no case to counterfeits of unknown origin.
We present to you a new section - “Good to know”. In their weekly review, TUT.BY correspondents give accessible and concise answers to important everyday questions. Where to take expired goods? What purchases cannot be returned? How to calm down your neighbors? What vitamins are needed for spring? Mayonnaise contains sodium benzoate, which can cause problems with the liver and other organs. If it interacts with vitamin C, the dangerous substance benzene is formed.
Old people are stingy: there is a reasonable reason for this. They are afraid of any loss, not hoping to gain anything anymore.
The sell-by date does not indicate the time at which a product will begin to spoil or become unsafe for consumption. But it does give clues to how long it will last at home if stored properly.
And if it comes out, then there is no need to worry, this product can be used for heat-treated dishes, for example, baking. It is in no way inferior in taste to a finished dish than it would be to a fresh product.
How to understand that you have been poisoned by mayonnaise? What to do in this case?
Often in the summer, people can get poisoned from store-bought salads and fast food that contain meat and mayonnaise. It is they, along with eggs and milk, that are susceptible to the strain of Staphylococcus aureus if they are stored at insufficiently low temperatures.
What are the symptoms of Staphylococcus aureus:
- spasmodic abdominal pain,
- nausea,
- vomit,
- loose stool.
The poisoned person must be taken to the hospital or a doctor called.
Mayonnaise generally cannot be stored for a long time at medium temperatures. Therefore, it cannot be kept warm for more than three to four hours. Even in the refrigerator, it is not recommended to store dishes with the addition of this sauce for longer than a day.
It is better to season the dish with mayonnaise immediately before serving. Avoid buying ready-made salads in the store, because you don’t know how long it’s been there.
This sauce is quite popular in the modern world. Once upon a time in the Soviet Union, people stood in lines to buy it. Now it is presented in a wide range to suit every taste. This includes Provençal, mayonnaise with the addition of quail eggs and much more.
There is no exact information about how he appeared. But there are interesting assumptions.
- First, on the island of Mayon, captured by the British, there was no food left except eggs and olive oil. Then the resourceful Duke Richelieu ground the egg yolks with olive oil, sugar and salt, then mixed them with olive oil and added lemon juice. This is the traditional recipe for mayonnaise.
- The second legend says: Mahon was besieged by the Spaniards under the leadership of Duke Louis de Crillon. He ordered something special and amazing to be served at the table in honor of the festive dinner. Then inventive chefs made an unusual sauce from butter and eggs.
If you find out why and how harmful mayonnaise is, you will most likely want to give it up.
- Firstly, it contains trans fats, essentially being a modified vegetable oil. Its molecules are not absorbed by the human body. At the same time, they settle on the walls of blood vessels, in the pancreas and liver.
- Secondly, the flavor enhancers added to it negatively affect the gastric microflora.
- Thirdly, quite fatty, this product adds extra pounds to women. You should think about why mayonnaise is harmful if you are watching your figure.
Mayonnaise contains sodium benzoate, which can cause problems with the liver and other organs. If it interacts with vitamin C, the dangerous substance benzene is formed.
Fans of hot dishes with the addition of this now familiar sauce should know that the aspartame in its composition turns into the toxic substance methanol when heated. It negatively affects the nervous and cardiovascular systems, even if you add sauce in small quantities, but often.
Stabilizers and thickeners, generously added to mayonnaise by manufacturers, damage tooth enamel and have a bad effect on the gastrointestinal system.
Despite the obvious harm of mayonnaise, it is not so easy to give up its use. After all, it has pronounced taste characteristics. But why not learn how to make it yourself? Then you won't have to risk your health. To do this, beat a raw egg, half a teaspoon of vinegar and the same amount of salt, and 200 milliliters of vegetable oil in a blender.
Yes, mayonnaise can have some benefits for the human body, provided that it is prepared at home from natural and fresh ingredients. It has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system if it contains eggs rather than egg powder. In addition, eggs are enriched with amino acids. The vegetable oil included in the composition has a good effect on the condition of the skin and hair. The presence of phosphorus, calcium and potassium in it will improve the condition of the nails.
First of all, you need to call an ambulance if you notice symptoms of poisoning. In the meantime, wait for her arrival, rinse your stomach. To do this, you need to drink several glasses of chilled boiled water and induce vomiting. When vomiting, a person loses a lot of fluid and therefore needs to drink more water to avoid dehydration.
It is quite possible to replace this delicacy with more healthy food additives:
- salted kefir,
- Greek yogurt with salt and pepper,
- olive oil,
- sour cream plus grated horseradish,
- sour cream combined with mustard,
- sour cream plus adjika,
- various milk sauces, such as bechamel.
What are the benefits and harms of mayonnaise? This and much more is covered in this video.
In a refrigerator
State standards determine the basic rules for organizing the storage of this gas station. The best conditions are considered to be in a refrigerated cabinet or warehouse, protected from exposure to sunlight, with working ventilation and a relative humidity of no more than 75%. The range of recommended temperature conditions is quite large - from 0 to +18°C. But it should be remembered that the higher the ambient temperature, the sooner the product will become unusable.
The manufacturer sets the period of safe use independently.
Very often, manufacturers include chemical additives such as potassium sorbate (E202), sodium benzoate (E211), thanks to which the taste is preserved for up to 7 months. On average, the product will retain its properties:
- From 30 to 180 days at t from 0 to +10°C (varies depending on the presence of artificial preservatives, antioxidants and antioxidants).
- From 7 to 45 days at t from +10°C to +18°C.
Homemade, original sauce, which contains exclusively natural products (egg yolk, vegetable oil, vinegar or lemon juice as a natural preservative, salt) will retain its nutritional value for only 2-3 days.
Selling such types as “olive” or “on quail eggs”, “from avocado”, as a rule, is only a marketing ploy, since it is not economically profitable for factories to use such expensive raw materials as olive oil and quail eggs. And such varieties are sold at a very competitive price in relation to ordinary Provencal.
Causes of poisoning
Salad is a popular dish that includes various ingredients and dressing. The product is especially popular during various feasts; it is prepared in large quantities. As a result, the salad is consumed for several days, which is fraught with the development of severe poisoning and adverse consequences.
What can lead to poisoning? There are several reasons that can provoke the development of intoxication.
It is worth mentioning separately about salads prepared not at home, but sold in stores. Often, products with poor shelf life are used for production; ready-made meals are stored in inappropriate conditions. Often the necessary technologies are not followed during preparation, which leads to poisoning.
Poisoning with such a dish can cause a lot of problems for a person, so you should avoid eating foods that cause mistrust.
Ice cream poisoning occurs for several reasons:
- Violation of product storage standards.
- Violation of production technologies.
- Poor quality raw materials.
- Non-compliance with production standards.
If low-quality raw materials were used during the production process, the risk of poisoning increases significantly. This also applies to ice cream; low-quality milk can ruin the treat. It's better to buy ice cream in stores. It should be firm, without signs of secondary freezing. It is also necessary to check the expiration date of the product. It will be difficult to get poisoned with such a product.
At room temperature
Mayonnaise is not intended to be stored at room temperature. Warm air accelerates the growth and development of bacteria and pathogens, which can lead to serious health consequences. If it is not possible to remove the container with the product into the refrigerator, you should consider the option of placing the product in the right conditions. If the weather permits, you can put the containers on the balcony or use the cellar, if available. An excellent option is to place the sealed container in ice water and change it periodically when heated.
When to seek medical help?
The appearance of unpleasant symptoms is a reason to provide first aid to the victim. A number of actions are carried out aimed at accelerating the removal of toxic substances from the body and normalizing the condition.
- It is necessary to induce vomiting in the patient. If it starts on its own, you cannot stop it (the body gets rid of the toxin on its own).
- During vomiting, cleanse the stomach with plenty of clean water. The procedure is repeated until the effluent water becomes clear.
- After washing, it is recommended that the patient be given some sorbent - Activated carbon, Enterosgel, Smecta. Such substances absorb poison from the stomach and intestines and promote rapid removal of the toxin from the body.
- Various laxatives will help you get rid of toxic substances faster.
- Diarrhea and constant vomiting during poisoning can provoke the development of dehydration. Therefore, a poisoned person should be given more liquid to drink in small sips.
- If lettuce poisoning is severe, then the victim is given complete rest, covered with a warm blanket and his condition is monitored.
- It is necessary to call a team of doctors to make sure that there is no spread of harmful microorganisms.
Treatment of severe poisoning is carried out in the toxicology department of a medical institution. The patient is prescribed the necessary examinations and procedures.
Treatment of poisoning with mayonnaise salad is the most common case. Such a product spoils easily and quickly. In most cases, intoxication is mild. However, there are some cases when contacting a medical facility is mandatory.
- A sharp increase in body temperature,
- There is a disturbance of consciousness, sharp fluctuations in blood pressure,
- Malfunctions of the cardiac system,
- Symptoms that do not go away for two to three days.
If such signs are present, there is a possibility that botulism or salmonellosis bacteria are spreading in the body.
Treatment of poisoning is carried out until all functions are completely normalized; special dietary nutrition is required.
Malaise may appear as early as half an hour after lunch, in which dangerous bacteria are hidden. But more often, residents begin to notice the first signs of poisoning after 4-6 hours, sometimes within several days.
Typical symptoms of poisoning, which are difficult to confuse with another disease, are diarrhea, severe nausea, repeated vomiting, which are accompanied by weakness, dizziness, and fever. Chills, heaviness or painful cramps in the stomach, flatulence, and excessive salivation are also common.
At the first dose, you need to drink from 2-3 to 5-6 glasses, and then induce vomiting. The rinsing procedure should be repeated until the flowing water is clear.
You will also need a tablet - doctors advise taking enterosorbents. These drugs bind and remove toxins, poisons, germs and bacteria from the body, preventing toxic substances from entering the blood. They help relieve symptoms of poisoning and normalize a person’s condition.
In addition, it is necessary to provide the patient with complete rest.
What does it look like when it goes bad?
Spoiled chocolate retains its appearance, taste and smell for 6 months after the expiration date. This rule applies only to bitter, dark and milk chocolate. The white variety does not contain cocoa powder and consists only of vegetable oil and powdered sugar. Because of this, it deteriorates faster.
If the chocolate has been in storage for more than 6 months since the expiration date or the storage conditions of the product have been seriously violated, the following changes are observed:
- the presence of an unpleasant odor;
- bitter taste;
- presence of mold;
- taste of rancid oil;
- violation of consistency - the tile becomes more fragile and breaks easily.
In such a situation, you should immediately get rid of chocolate so as not to provoke the development of food poisoning. Signs of spoilage appear most quickly on a product with filling . Various fruits, caramels, creams and cookies accumulate moisture more easily, so mold may appear on them.
Chocolate made from natural raw materials will spoil 2 times faster, unlike substitute products. Soy lecithin, dyes, flavors, and palm oil slow down the breakdown and oxidation of fats.
If a white coating appears on chocolate, this does not mean that the product has spoiled and cannot be consumed. This phenomenon is caused by a temperature difference, due to which powdered sugar with accumulated moisture and cocoa butter appear on the surface of the tile. Therefore, chocolate with a white coating is safe to eat every day .
How to avoid poisoning: useful tips
To reduce the risk of poisoning when eating ice cream, you must carefully read the composition of the product. If ice cream contains a lot of chemical additives, vegetable fats and other low-quality ingredients, it is better to refuse the purchase. You should not eat ice cream on the packaging of which information about the composition, expiration date and storage conditions is erased or blurred. If the packaging itself is defective (especially if its integrity is damaged), the product is also considered unfit for consumption.
You should not eat ice cream that is deformed, dented, melted or leaking. If you feel chunks of ice or other solid particles when you bite into it, the product has most likely been frozen repeatedly or improperly stored. Good, high-quality ice cream has the following characteristics:
- homogeneous delicate texture;
- absence of rancid taste and unpleasant odor;
- absence of any particles in the frozen mass (except for nuts, fruits and other additives);
- uniform color;
- smooth glaze without white deposits or streaks.
Ice cream is a high-calorie, but nevertheless quite healthy treat. When choosing ice cream, you should carefully study the label and appearance of the product so as not to cause harm to your health with a low-quality product.
What determines the safety of the product?
The safety of the product depends on many factors, including:
- Type of container;
- Production method (home or industrial);
- Presence of preservatives;
- Compliance with storage conditions, including the required temperature and relative humidity levels;
- Carrying out manufacturing procedures such as refining and pasteurization of ingredients;
- The quality and degree of freshness of the ingredients used.
The shelf life of sauce prepared at home with the addition of eggs (in particular yolks) is much lower than that produced in a factory using preservatives and chemicals that reduce the risk of microbial growth.
Correct capacity
To preserve the nutritional value, the containers used must comply with the requirements of SanPiN and GOST. As a rule, the dressing is placed in:
- Glass jars. The downside is the risk of damage during transportation due to the fragility of the material, the threat of direct sunlight, which leads to rancidity of the fat component (Housewife's Dream, Ryaba)
- Aluminum or polymer tubes (Calve, Yante).
- Plastic glasses, jars, buckets (Makheev, Zdrava, EZhK, Laska).
- Polymer, sealed bags (Ricco, Sloboda, Sdobri, Dobavkin).
Correctly selected packaging allows the manufacturer to minimize possible risks of product damage and optimize the requirements for placement in warehouses and points of sale.
Closed or opened
The closed factory packaging allows you to keep the product in the refrigerator for up to 90 days. If the container is opened, the product can be eaten within 14 days from the moment of depressurization. Store strictly in the refrigerator.
Home-made mayonnaise in a tightly closed container will retain its nutritional value for up to 3 days, if opened, 1.5-2 days.
Symptoms of salad poisoning
Lettuce intoxication belongs to the group of food poisoning, so the symptoms are also similar. What is recommended to pay attention to in case of overdose?
- Nausea, gag reflex,
- Painful sensations in the stomach area,
- intestinal disorder,
- Feeling chills, cold sweats,
- Painful sensations and dizziness,
- Increased salivation
- Apathetic state, lethargy, desire to sleep,
- Increased body temperature
- Increased heart rate,
- Increased gas formation,
- Pallor of the skin.
In severe conditions, in the absence of necessary first aid, a person gradually develops a feverish state, and the pain in the stomach intensifies. There is a violation of respiratory function and loss of consciousness. When poisoned by botulism bacteria, a coma develops with possible death. Find out in more detail about the signs of botulism and what products it may contain.
If signs of lettuce intoxication are detected, the necessary measures must be taken as quickly as possible to prevent the absorption of toxic substances into the body.
- In addition to indigestion, there is a severe headache, pain in the kidneys, liver or other internal organs;
- the patient has a high temperature, severe sweating, and a feeling of suffocation;
- if a small child or an elderly person is poisoned, you should definitely contact a doctor;
- there is a suspicion that you have been poisoned by mushrooms;
- Severe vomiting and diarrhea persist for two days;
- symptoms of poisoning last longer than a week.
Why it’s dangerous: signs of food poisoning
Chocolate that is more than 6 months expired can cause food poisoning , with serious consequences. In this case, the person experiences the following clinical picture:
- vomiting, nausea;
- increased body temperature;
- epigastric pain, myalgia, muscle weakness;
- dizziness;
- increased sweating;
- cardiopalmus;
- deterioration in general health.
In some cases, it is possible to develop an allergy with swelling of the tongue and pharynx . Damaged tiles give off an unpleasant odor and taste like rancid oil. This is due to the oxidation of cocoa butter and the destruction of fatty acids in the product.

What to drink if you are poisoned?
The main thing is to ensure that the patient drinks plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. It is recommended to drink boiled water, weak sweet tea, berry fruit drinks, jelly, and it is better to avoid carbonated drinks. Also, special saline solutions will not hurt - they will help replenish fluid loss and restore the acid-base balance. They are usually produced in the form of powders, which are diluted in a liter of hot boiled water.
On the first day it is better to refuse food, and on the second you can start drinking broth, pureed vegetable soups with rice, mucous decoctions, gradually expanding the menu. Pickled, spicy, salted and smoked foods should be completely excluded from the diet until all symptoms of poisoning go away.
Most often, symptoms of poisoning disappear within a week with proper treatment. But in some cases, poisoning is life-threatening. Then just see a doctor.
What to do if you have food poisoning
If you ate something wrong, and after 2-6 hours you have a fever, sweating and diarrhea, you should carry out a few simple procedures. First, rinse your stomach:
- Dilute several granules of potassium permanganate in 1.5–2 liters of clean water to obtain a pale pink liquid. If there is no potassium manganese in the house, then replace it with a tablespoon of baking soda.
- Go to the toilet with the prepared solution.
- Drink a little, then use your fingers to induce vomiting.
- Repeat step three until no more food comes out. If only water comes out, then you have completed the gastric lavage.
If your body has already emptied your stomach on its own, and after that you feel better, you can do without forced lavage.
Then, to reduce the toxic effect on the body, you can take a sorbent. The cheapest and most accessible option is activated carbon. Take one tablet for every 10 kg of your weight. For example, if you weigh 50 kg, you need 5 tablets, and if you weigh about 80 kg, 8 tablets.
Instead of activated carbon, you can drink other specialized sorbents, for example, Polysorb, Smecta and others. They must be taken according to the instructions.
The next step is to restore water balance. Diarrhea and vomiting dehydrate the body, so try to drink more clean water - at least a glass per hour.
If you do not feel better within 3–6 hours, you should call an ambulance.
Until the symptoms of acute food poisoning (nausea, sweating, temperature above 37.5, diarrhea) go away, you should refuse to eat at all. Usually with active treatment they disappear within 3-6 hours. Then for the next couple of days you need to eat breadcrumbs, jelly, oatmeal porridge with water or liquid mashed potatoes (without adding milk or eggs).
How to understand that poisoning has occurred?
Symptoms of poisoning when consuming low-quality or expired ice cream do not differ from the clinical signs of other toxic infections. First, a person experiences nausea, the intensity of which increases several times within 1-2 hours from the moment of consuming the product. In case of severe poisoning, nausea may turn into vomiting, but copious amounts of vomit are usually not observed.
Other signs of poisoning may include:
- diarrhea (stool has a foamy or watery consistency, a foul odor and may contain cheesy inclusions);
- skin rash (a particularly common symptom when poisoned by cheap ice cream with a lot of chemical additives);
- painful urge to defecate;
- headache;
- drowsiness;
- chills.
Infection with salmonella and E. coli is manifested by severe cramping abdominal pain, repeated and profuse vomiting, dehydration, pallor and frequent yellow or green loose stools. If these symptoms occur, the patient must be hospitalized in an infectious diseases hospital, since severe dehydration can provoke heart failure (especially in the elderly).
For sunburn
The universal sauce can be used instead of traditional sour cream, kefir or chicken egg whites, used to eliminate discomfort from sunburned skin. The composition, rich in vitamins and minerals, is applied several times in a row to the affected area. To avoid the appearance of dropsy, it is not recommended to rub the sauce into the skin.

What to do?
If a person is poisoned by ice cream and the symptoms of the pathology are mild or moderate in intensity, medical assistance will consist of gastric lavage and taking intestinal enterosorbents. To stimulate the evacuation of toxic contents from the stomach, drinking plenty of salt is indicated. It is better to use special mixtures for rehydration and detoxification (Hidrovit, Regidron) to prepare the solution, but if you have such drugs in your medicine cabinet, the saline solution can be prepared from ordinary table salt. To do this, you need to dilute 1-2 teaspoons of salt in a liter of water and drink this mixture in small sips for an hour.
After this, it is necessary to give the patient any sorbent drug. The following sorbents are considered the most effective for binding E. coli:
- Activated carbon;
- Enterosgel;
- Polyphepan;
- Smecta.
For diarrhea, symptomatic therapy is necessary (Lopedium, Imodium). To relieve abdominal pain, you can take 20-40 mg of drotaverine. For severe vomiting, when oral medication is not possible, rectal administration of papaverine hydrochloride 1% (1-3 suppositories per day with an interval of 3-4 hours) is indicated.
How to avoid becoming a victim of poisoning?
- do not buy ready-made salads dressed with mayonnaise;
- wash vegetables and fruits, dishes and cutlery, and hands thoroughly before eating and preparing food;
- Before breaking an egg, wash it with soap;
- change kitchen towels and dishwashing sponges more often, because they accumulate pathogenic bacteria;
- get some cutting boards. Greens, vegetables and fruits, cheeses and sausages should not be cut on a board on which raw meat and fish were cut;
- do not store raw meat and fish and prepared foods in the same compartment of the refrigerator;
- Don't prepare a lot of food for future use. Prepared meals should not be stored in the refrigerator for longer than three days;
- be picky in choosing catering outlets.
For removing stickers and tape marks
Labels on jars, traces of tape on new furniture and sticky places where dust has already settled can be easily removed with a few drops of sauce.
To do this, just rub mayonnaise into the stain, wait a few minutes, and then use a kitchen sponge with the hard side to remove the softened glue.
Finally, the surface should be washed with dishwashing detergent, autopaste, mustard powder or regular laundry soap.
General characteristics of condensed milk
After an illness, the patient must follow the rules so that complications do not arise. What to do after ice cream poisoning?
- monitor nutrition and adhere to a therapeutic diet;
- instead of the usual liquid, drink more alkaline water;
- adhere to bed rest.
Intoxication may cause anemia and weakened immune defenses. In such a situation, the patient experiences rapid body fatigue and can no longer cope with the usual amount of work.
In addition, you will have to remove a number of familiar dishes from your diet:
- fermented milk products (even low fat content);
- pickles, fried and spicy foods;
- semi-finished products, meat delicacies.
It is prohibited to overload the gastrointestinal tract during this period; foods that can irritate the intestinal walls are excluded.
Mushrooms or nuts are considered complex foods, so they should not be present in the diet.
Egg poisoning
Condensed milk is obtained by boiling sugar with milk. It has a white color, viscous mass, and a pleasant aroma of milk. It is important to know that it should not contain additional flavors: vanilla, baked milk. This may indicate the addition of flavorings or the product being stale.
Violation of technology during production is fraught with the risk of pathogenic microorganisms getting into the delicacy. These organisms live and reproduce for a long time, after which they enter the human body and cause food poisoning, which in some cases can be fatal.
If a person has eaten some expired condensed milk that has just passed its expiration date, then there may be no consequences. Unpleasant health consequences may occur if a lot of condensed milk that has expired has been consumed without prior heat treatment.
Condensed milk, what could be tastier than this delicacy, familiar to everyone since childhood. Adults and children love this milk; it is especially popular on long hikes and on picnics. To avoid health problems, you need to consume only fresh condensed milk of good quality.
Expired condensed milk cannot always be disposed of quickly. Expired milk can be used for confectionery purposes if you follow the rules below:
- The time of expired products does not exceed one month;
- Condensed milk is in a metal can;
- The product must be natural and not contain other additives;
- Before use, the expired product will be thermally treated;
- The product is canned and stored in a cold area.
Expired condensed milk is boiled in a jar for at least three hours over low heat with a normal amount of water. This condensed milk is used to make cakes or as an additive to dough.
Is it possible to eat expired condensed milk? If you have consumed a small amount of a product whose expiration date has recently passed, no problems with the gastrointestinal tract may arise. However, this does not mean that this condensed milk is completely safe. Especially when it comes to feeding children. After all, the walls of a child’s stomach are not able to filter toxic substances as effectively as those of adults.
Condensed milk is produced by boiling whole cow's milk or skim milk with sugar. The result is a thick, viscous mass of white or slightly cream color, with a characteristic taste and smell. Good condensed milk should taste sweet and leave an aftertaste of fresh cow's milk. There should be no foreign flavors - vanilla, baked milk, this may indicate that the product is unnatural.
Is this chocolate edible?
High-quality chocolate, which is made from crushed cocoa beans, cocoa butter, sugar or powder and dairy products, can be stored for a very long time.
It is usually considered that a product is unfit for consumption if a white coating appears on it. But in fact, “gray hair” is cocoa butter. It appears when chocolate is stored incorrectly: subjected to sudden temperature changes. Such a coating rather indicates the high quality of the product, because it does not form on cheap chocolates made from palm oil.
If we are talking exclusively about this defect, the chocolate can be eaten, but only within 6 months after the expiration date. And we are talking about bitter, dark, milk (but not white!) chocolate without fillers. If the product contains fruit fillings, candied fruits, cookie crumbs, caramel, nuts, raisins, this product should be immediately thrown into the trash.
If chocolate has an unpleasant odor or taste of spoiled oil, mold, or bitterness, such chocolate should not be eaten.
Prevention in case of poisoning
How to avoid poisoning? Salad is a popular dish and is served in every home. Therefore, it is recommended to take preventive measures when preparing and consuming it.
- You need to prepare the salad with clean tools, hands and in clean dishes,
- Subject vegetables and fruits to the necessary processing before cutting,
- The use of canned products is permissible if you are confident in their quality,
- Observe the storage conditions and time, it is better to throw away the long-standing salad rather than get poisoned,
- It is not recommended to buy ready-made meals unless you are sure they are fresh,
- You should not prepare salads in large quantities in advance; it is better to add the dressing immediately before serving,
- Before cooking, it is recommended to pay close attention to expiration dates and choose products carefully.
Lettuce poisoning is not uncommon. Intoxication with this dish can cause a lot of trouble for a person, so it is recommended to adhere to preventive measures. If signs of poisoning occur, it is necessary to provide the victim with the necessary assistance and transport him to a medical facility.
Hair conditioning mask
Mayonnaise can also help out when the hair has become brittle and lost its natural shine, but there is no nourishing mask at hand. The exposure time of the mayonnaise mask is 30 minutes, after which the hair should be thoroughly washed with warm water and shampoo.

Poisoning in children
It is no secret that a child’s fragile body endures poisoning much harder and more painfully than an adult.
The first symptoms in a child begin to appear half an hour or forty minutes after consuming low-quality products in the form of abdominal discomfort, after another half an hour there is a disturbance in the functioning of the digestive system, and then - after half an hour to an hour - other signs of intoxication appear:
- temperature rises;
- the skin turns pale;
- weakness appears;
- coordination is impaired;
- convulsions occur.
Ice cream poisoning affects children more severely, occurs faster and is much more complex and painful.
